Go tankless — enjoy superior energy efficiency and endless hot water!

If you’re in the market for a new water heater for your Florida home, you can’t go wrong with a propane tankless water heater. More and more homeowners are getting rid of their traditional storage tank water heaters and upgrading to a compact, high-efficiency, on-demand system.

Homes with tankless water heaters are up to 34% more energy efficient than homes with storage tank units, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. And propane is one of the best fuels for powering a hot water system.

Your local propane provider can help you find the best tankless water heater for your home. And with generous rebates from the Propane Education Foundation of Florida, you can save considerable money on installation too.

How do propane tankless water heaters work?

As the name suggests, there is no storage tank in a propane tankless water heater. Instead, these units heat water on demand whenever you use a hot water tap, fixture or appliance.

Cold water goes through a pipe right into the water heater unit. A propane gas burner uses a super-hot flame to immediately heat it to your set temperature. A sensor determines how intense the flame needs to be. The heated water proceeds to your showerhead, dishwasher, sink or whatever needs it. Your tankless water heater continues to deliver hot water until you turn off the fixture or appliance. Then it shuts down.

What size of tankless water heater do you need?

Unlike a traditional water heater, there is no hot water recovery rate with a tankless system. That’s because there is no tank of hot water to replenish. Instead, there is a flow rate. Your propane company will determine what product is best for you by looking at the temperature of the water coming into the unit and the peak flow demand for your home (that is, how much hot water you would need from the various hot water products in your home).

Your propane company can then choose the best water heater for your home’s peak needs. Once this tankless water heater is in place, you can enjoy endless hot water. You won’t need to worry about getting a cold shower because the washing machine has just turned on in the laundry room.

Why are tankless water heaters more efficient?

Let’s start by discussing the inefficiencies of traditional water heaters. A storage tank water heater will often heat and reheat unused water over and over so that it’s ready when you need it. This means you’re burning fuel to warm up water you aren’t using.

Tankless water heaters only turn on when you need hot water, eliminating these “standby losses.” That way, you get more hot water with lower operational costs.

Propane tankless water heaters also have less exposure to corrosive particles in water than storage tank units. This typically gives them a long service life — 20 years or more with proper maintenance.

What other benefits do tankless water heaters offer?

In addition to upgraded hot water generation and energy efficiency, tankless water heaters save you a lot of space in your home. The units are generally the size of a suitcase, giving you roughly 12 extra square feet of floor space. And because there isn’t a large tank of water, you don’t need to worry about gallons of water spilling and damaging your home.

The air supply and exhaust vents of tankless water heaters are sealed, so carbon monoxide gas can’t leak into your home because of a back-drafting issue.
